ATLANTA — State Sen. Elena Parent, a Democrat from Atlanta and a member of Senate leadership, said Thursday she will not seek re-election, ending a legislative run that has spanned both chambers under the Gold Dome.

Parent has served in the Georgia Senate since 2015 after four years in the Georgia House, where she served from 2011 to 2014. She currently holds the post of Minority Caucus Chair and sits on several high-profile committees, including Education and Youth, Judiciary, Appropriations, and Government Oversight.

In announcing her decision, Parent framed her tenure as equal parts meaningful and maddening — a familiar description in a legislature where Democrats are often outnumbered and big-ticket policy wins are hard to come by. She said she plans to begin a new chapter after the session and signaled she believes she can make a bigger impact outside the Senate than by grinding through another campaign and another term.

Parent said she intends to share more reflections after the legislative session ends.
