As spring break crowds pour into airports and security lines grow, AAA is urging travelers to plan for extra time and heavier congestion — especially at checkpoints.

AAA said spring break is typically one of the busiest travel periods of the year and warned that staffing limitations at TSA are adding pressure at some airports, contributing to slower lines and longer waits.

A recent AAA Consumer Pulse survey found that 36% of Georgians plan to travel for spring break. Among those travelers, AAA said 47% plan to visit a beach destination, 27% plan to visit a theme park, and 17% plan to take an ocean or large cruise.

To reduce the risk of missed flights, AAA advised travelers to check expected TSA wait times before leaving home, using airport websites or the MyTSA app. AAA also recommended arriving at least two to three hours early — even for domestic flights — noting that some airports have already encouraged travelers to get there earlier than usual because of high volume and slower checkpoint processing.

AAA also encouraged travelers to reserve airport parking in advance, use airline apps for real-time gate and delay alerts, and avoid checking bags when possible to reduce time spent in crowded terminals. Keeping carry-on items organized can help speed processing through checkpoints, AAA said.

AAA added that travelers may want to consider travel insurance to help offset costs tied to delays, cancellations or lost luggage.
