The New Jersey Senate advanced legislation requiring a structural engineer, architect or employee of a certified fire escape inspection company to inspect fire escapes or exterior stairways.
S-2948, sponsored by state Sen. Troy Singleton, D-Burlington, would require that only structural engineers, architects, or employees of certified fire escape inspection companies perform compliance inspections for fire escapes and exterior stairways.
Though current law requires inspections, it is unclear who is permitted to perform them and ensure compliance. Proponents say that by creating more concrete standards for evaluating the safety and integrity of fire escapes, the state can better ensure that they are kept in good repair and safe for use when evacuation is needed.
The Senate voted 31-8 to pass the legislation.
