New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy signed Executive Order No. 379, which ordered the U.S. and New Jersey flags to be raised to full staff for the remainder of the day following President Donald Trump’s inauguration.
Upon taking the oath of office, President Trump issued a Proclamation directing the U.S. flag to be raised to full staff for the remainder of Inauguration Day. Murphy signed Executive Order No. 373, ordering flags lowered on Dec. 31, 2024, consistent with a Proclamation from then-President Joe Biden in recognition and mourning of former President James “Jimmy” Earl Carter, Jr. President Jimmy Carter passed away on Dec. 29, 2024, at the age of 100.
On Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2025, flags will be lowered again and flown at half-staff until sunset on Jan. 28, 2025, consistent with Biden’s proclamation and Executive Order No. 373.
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine previously took similar action. However, he didn’t wait for Trump’s executive order.
