ATLANTA – The Georgia House of Representatives re-elected state Rep. Jon Burns, R-Newington, as House speaker for the 2025-26 legislative session.

Burns has served as speaker since 2023 and is Georgia’s 75th Speaker of the House.

“I am incredibly grateful to my colleagues in the House for their continued trust and confidence,” Burns said in a statement. “Over the last two years, we have worked together to pass meaningful measures that have lowered taxes, brought historic opportunities to our state, supported our families and businesses, and driven Georgia forward. We will continue to prioritize policies that uplift every Georgian, and continue to make our state the best place to live, work, and raise a family.”

The speaker serves as the presiding officer of the legislative body. He is responsible for determining the leadership and membership of House committees. While the House is in session, the Speaker is charged with assigning legislation to committees, calling legislation for debate and enforcing the rules of the House.

Burns represents Georgia’s 159th House District, which includes Screven County and portions of Bulloch and Effingham counties. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2004.
