New Jersey Assembly committee advances legislation to ban player-specific prop bets

The New Jersey Assembly Tourism, Gaming and the Arts Committee advanced a measure proponents say should protect student-athletes from harassment and to safeguard the integrity of college sports.

Bill A4905, sponsored by Assemblyman Sterley Stanley, D-Middlesex, would prohibit sports wagering licensees from offering or accepting wagers on player-specific proposition bets on college sports.

The bill defines a proposition bet as a side wager on a part of a sport or athletic event that does not concern the outcome of the sport or athletic event. Player-specific proposition bets include players’ stats and which player will score first.
