Ohio lawmakers want to legalize and tax wagering on professional and collegiate sports or athletic events in the Buckeye State.

The move follows a May 2018 U.S. Supreme Court ruling opened the door for states to legalize sports wagering. Proceeds from sports gambling would benefit education in Ohio.

“At its core – this bill is intended to provide additional funding for public education in Ohio by making sports betting legal,” state Rep. Dave Greenspan, R-Westlake, said in a news release. “The format and structure of the bill provides clarity as to the authority overseeing sport betting in Ohio while providing flexibility to address opportunities and challenges facing this newly legalized industry.”
