Haley signs bill removing flag from S.C. statehouse

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley today signed a bill to remove the Confederate battle flag from flying on the statehouse grounds. The flag is to be removed tomorrow morning.

“Today, as the Senate did before them, the House of Representatives has served the State of South Carolina and her people with great dignity,” Haley said in a statement. “I’m grateful for their service‎ and their compassion. It is a new day in South Carolina, a day we can all be proud of, a day that truly brings us all together as we continue to heal, as one people and one state.”

Haley, a Republican, last month called for the flag to be removed, saying the flag’s removal eliminates a divisive symbol. However, the flag could not be removed without action from the state legislature.
