A new exhibit at the Bath Postal Museum in Bath, England, highlights letters recovered from World War I wrecks.
“Letters from the Deep” features letters selected from the Wreck Cover collection of Maj. Adrian Hopkins. Hopkins lost an arm fighting in World War I and was awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry during the battle.
Hopkins went on to thrice serve as mayor of Bath. His daughter, Ann Hopkins-Clarke, is a trustee of the Bath Postal Museum.
The museum has owned the collection for some years. But, the collection has not been on display since the museum moved to its current location on Northgate Street in the heart of Bath six years ago.
“Adrian Hopkins was a well-known character in Bath, and also internationally because of his philatelic knowledge,” the museum said in a news release. “His innate ability to describe the various displays of his collections, which he regularly presented to audiences both here and abroad, was always a delight as he was a raconteur with a lively wit.”
