D3 football recap: Wabash, Wittenberg, Maryville win in week 3 action

Wabash College benefited from four Denison University turnovers en route to a 50-13 victory.

Quarterback Michael Putko threw for 173 yards and rushed for 63 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead the Little Giants to victory in Crawfordsville, Ind. Wabash is ranked No. 18 in the the first AFCA Division III poll of the year, released Monday.

In all, Wabash (2-0) rushed for 257 yards and six touchdowns on the afternoon. Meanwhile, Denison quarterback Brandon Sklenar threw for 114 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 31 yards more to lead the offense for the Big Red (2-1).

In Greencastle, Ind., Wittenberg University (1-1) passed for 226 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 235 yards and five touchdowns in a 45-0 win over DePauw University (0-2). Wittenberg is ranked No. 22 in the season’s first AFCA Division III poll.

In Gambier, Ohio, quarterback Mason Espinosa threw for 270 yards and a touchdown as Ohio Wesleyan University (2-0) defeated Kenyon College (1-2) by a 20-13 margin.

In Sewanee, Tenn., running back Travis Felder rushed for 173 yards and two touchdowns while quarterback Evan Pittenger rushed for 110 yards and three touchdowns as Maryville College (2-1) defeated Sewanee: The University of the South (1-2) by a 42-30 margin.

In Jackson, Miss., quarterback Zak Thrasher passed for 165 yards and Mike Barthelemy rushed for 113 yards as Millsaps College (3-0) defeated Point University (2-1), 38-17.

In DeLand, Fla., quarterback Tyson Beacham threw for 206 yards and a pair of touchdowns while running back Issac Nichols rushed for 201 yards to lead Birmingham-Southern College (3-0) to a 49-34 victory over Stetson University (1-2). Quarterback Ryan Tentler threw for 278 yards to lead Stetson.

In Buffalo, N.Y., University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (2-0) cruised to victory over Buffalo State (2-1), 55-14. UW-Whitewater jumped to a 24-0 first quarter lead and never looked back as they racked up 397 total offensive yards.

In New Concord, Ohio, Mount Union (2-0) posted a 37-0 victory over Muskingum University (0-2). Quarterback Kevin Burke passed for 247 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 82 yards while running back Germany Woods rushed for 79 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead the Mount Union offense.

Mt. Union topped the AFCA Division III poll. For Mt. Union, the win marked the 17th consecutive victory, the 75th straight win and 111th consecutive regular season road victory.

In Alfred, N.Y., quarterback Dominic Scavo threw for 135 yards and a touchdown while running back Austin Dwyer rushed for 118 yards and a pair of touchdowns as Alfred University (1-1) knocked off Montclair State University (1-2).

In Macon, Ga., Mercer University, a Football Championship Subdivision member, defeated Berry College by a 43-0 score. Click here for a full game recap.
