Forty-nine percent of pet-owners plan to travel with their pets in the next 12 months, according to a new survey from TripAdvisor.

Of those traveling with pets, 56 percent will stay in hotels with them. That’s an increase from the 51 percent who have done so in the last year. At the same time, 35 percent plan to stay in a vacation rental, an increase from 24 percent.

“Our survey shows that TripAdvisor travelers love the companionship of their pets while on vacation as 57 percent indicated it’s their top reason for taking them along for the ride,” Brooke Ferencsik, director of communications at TripAdvisor, said in a news release. “Nearly three-quarters of respondents who vacation with their pets noted that they’re typically able to find animal-friendly accommodations when traveling, which is good news for all the Lassies and Luckys out there.”

Among those who travel with their pets, 45 percent carry a dedicated piece of luggage containing their pets’ every need.

  • Rest and play: 73 percent pack pet bedding, while 79 percent tote toys
  • Pets’ paperwork: 45 percent travel with health and rabies certification, while six percent carry pet passports or another form of animal travel ID
  • Catwalk-worthy looks: seven percent pack pet-wear and outfits
