Savannah on Saturday welcomed the newest addition to the city’s world-famous collection of monuments.
The new World War II Memorial — know as “A World Apart” — honors World War II veterans from Chatham County. More than 500 heroes from Savannah died during World War II, according to the Veteran’s Council of Chatham County.
The memorial’s 20-foot-tall steel globe “is divided into two parts, representing the Eastern/European Theater and the Western/Pacific Theater,” according to the Council. “A walk-through between the two parts will display the names of the local men and women whose lives were lost in World War II.”
Officials broke ground for the monument, located on River Street, on Memorial Day. The memorial was conceptualized and designed by Savannah’s Eric Meyerhoff.
“It’s a recognition and a way of thanking — if that’s possible to do — the contributions and the sacrifices of those who gave their lives,” Georgia Public Broadcasting quoted actor James Cromwell, honored at Saturday’s festivities, as saying.
