Campus to Host Musical Greats for Second Annual Jazz Guitar Festival

Downhill Denison will be alive with the sounds of music as the Second Annual Guitar Festival makes its way to the Burke Recital Hall.

The event will take place next Sunday (April 11) at 3:00 p.m. and is co-sponsored by the Music Department and the Student Activities Committee. This year’s festival is scheduled to feature guitarists Jack Wilkins and Cal Collins.

Cincinnati’s Cal Collins has released ten albums of his own and recorded with jazz legends such as Benny Goodman and Woody Herman. Currently, he is the house guitarist for the Concord Jazz label.

Jack Wilkins has released seven solo albums and recorded dozens more with such musical greats as Tony Bennett, Sarah Vaughn, Chet Baker, and Stanley Turrentine.

The festival will also feature a handful of returning artists: Stan Smith of Capitol University, Guy Remonko of Ohio University, and Chris Buzzelli and Jeff Halsey of Bowling Green State University.

Also on the bill is Denison University’s own instructor of music, Tom Carroll. He is also responsible for directing the event.

“The first was a success,” said Carroll. “This one promises to be just as good as the first.”

All of the musicians taking part in the event bring many years of musical experience with them.

Preceding the event, at 2:30 p.m., will be a pre-concert talk with those involved in the festival.

For more information concerning the event, contact the Denison University Music Department at (740) 587-6220 or the Student Activities Committee at (740) 587-6394.

The event is free and open to both Denison students and the general public.
