1986 Mets defeat 1983 Phillies, 4-2
NEW YORK — It took the Mets 19 players, but they got the job done.
Sid Fernandez pitched five shutout innings before being lifted in the bottom half of the inning for a pinch hitter, Lee Mazzilli, who walked. The Mets ended up with one run in the fifth.
The Mets bullpen gave a scare with both Roger McDowell and Jesse Orosco giving up a run each in pitching only one inning. Rookie Rick Anderson pitched two scoreless innings for the save.
The Mets used three different short stops in the game — Rafael Santana, Kevin Elster and Kevin Mitchell.

Exhibition: 1906 Chicago Cubs 11, 1884 Providence Grays 2
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Charlie “Old Hoss” Radbourn didn’t fare well against the best team of the first decade of the 1900s.
The 1906 Cubs pounded Radbourn for 11 hits and 11 runs, forcing him out of the game in the seventh inning. The Grays, not known for their bullpen, turned to John Cattanach to stop the hemorrhaging in the seventh. Charlie Sweeney pitched two perfect innings to finish the game.
Mordecai “Three Finger” Brown tied the Grays in knots, scattering eight hits in seven innings and letting up only one earned run. A second, unearned run was scored against Brown.
Offensively, Cubs third baseman Harry Steinfeldt went three for five with a double and a stolen base. Unlikely hero Joe Tinker, ss, hit an inside the park homerun.
Historical Note: In 1884, Charlie Radbourn started 73 games and completed all of them.

1986 Mets defeat 1973 Braves, 13-6
NEW YORK — It wasn’t pretty, but New York pulled out a victory.
Starting pitcher Ron Darling only lasted five innings, but managed to pull out a victory. Four pitchers from the Mets’ bullpen helped seal the 13-6 victory.
Mookie Wilson went long and Gary Carter hit a grand slam. Roger McDowell and Jesse Orosco teamed up to finish off the Braves in the ninth.
