Two people were killed after a motorist drove through a Christmas market in the eastern German city of Magdeburg.

Between 60 and 80 people were injured. According to Fox News Channel, the driver was identified as a doctor from Saudi Arabia.

“The pictures are terrible,” the Associated Press quoted city spokesperson Michael Reif as saying. “My information is that a car drove into the Christmas market visitors, but I can’t yet say from what direction and how far.”

Officials believe the incident, which transpired around 7 p.m. local time, was intentional. There may have been an explosive device in the vehicle, CNN reported.

Authorities arrested the driver.
