Smyrna lecture focuses on Creek and Cherokee women

SMYRNA, Georgia — The manager of Smyrna’s history museum will give a lecture discussing women’s roles in Cherokee and Muscogee Creek cultures both before and after relocation.

Jennie Eldredge will present “First Women: Culture and Change Among the Creek and Cherokee” at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 3, in the meeting room of the Smyrna Library. Light refreshments will be served.

The 45-minute lecture will cover the shared ancestry of both groups in Georgia and look at how women anchored these matrilineal groups throughout their history. A question-and-answer session will follow.

Eldredge grew up in East Cobb County and graduated from Georgia State University with a BA in Anthropology and an M.A. in Heritage Preservation. She has been the museum manager for Smyrna since October 2017, overseeing the Museum and three historic cemeteries.

The Friends of Smyrna Library sponsors Sunday Lectures.
