Smyrna Museum to unveil temporary exhibit on Brawner Hospital

SMYRNA, Georgia — The Smyrna Museum will unveil a new temporary exhibit exploring the history of the former Brawner Hospital.

The museum will unveil “A Mind Without Rhythm: A History of Brawner Hospital” during a reception from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 18. The Smyrna Historical Society will provide light refreshments.

The 25-patient Brawner Sanitarium opened in September 1910 and remained in operation as the Brawner Psychiatric Institute and Brawner North until about 2000. The nearby Taylor-Brawner House dates to about 1890, and Dr. Albert Brawner and his family lived there from about 1922 until 1960.

The city of Smyrna has operated the Taylor-Brawner House and Brawner Sanitarium since 2009 as Taylor-Brawner Park.
