NEW YORK — The New York Mets on Saturday honored their World 1969 squad, a team that defied the odds to claim the franchise’s first world championship.
The summer of 1969 was a transformation year for the nation. Thousands gathered in upstate New York for Woodstock, and the United States sent a man to the moon.
In the middle of it all, the Miracle Mets began to pick up momentum for an improbable run.
The team kicked off its celebratory weekend on Thursday when it renamed a section of 126th Street to Seaver Way in honor Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Seaver, who has retired from public life. The team announced it plans to unveil a statue in his honor.
The festivities continued Saturday when members of the 1969 paraded down newly renamed Seaver Way on their way to Citi Field, where they partook in a pregame ceremony.
Attendees from the 1969 club included Ron Swoboda, Cleon Jones and Ed Kranepool.
