DANIELSVILLE, Ga. — Nineteen years to the day after a 3-year-old girl died while in the care of her father and his common-law wife, Madison County authorities said the toddler was murdered and the wife is responsible.
Citing new and mostly unspecified information, investigators said Wednesday that they charged 60-year-old Arlene Smith Miller with murder and first-degree cruelty to children in the death of Kasi Sanders on May 23, 1988.
The Madison County Sheriff’s Office and Georgia Bureau of Investigation reopened the case after Miller was arrested May 3 in connection with a murder in Tennessee. Authorities there say Miller and her estranged husband — Jimmy Dean Miller — killed 53-year-old Linda Guge, 53, of Indiana, on Dec. 31, 2000, and dragged her body behind a vehicle more than 3 miles up a mountain in Cumberland County, Tenn.
After the Tennessee arrest, sheriff’s investigators began receiving telephone calls about Kasi’s case, said sheriff’s department Capt. Mike Benner.
