History is complex; take time to explore it

BELFAST, Northern Ireland — History is complex, and nowhere is that more apparent than in Northern Ireland. The past remains ever-present; visitors can see where it happened and how it still divides the city today.

Whether it’s the Titanic or the Troubles, it’s part of the story, but it doesn’t have to define the future path. More than one person we spoke with in Belfast said, “We never want to go back,” or words to that effect.

Cities are interesting and worth visiting because of their stories. Many places feel like they’re must-sees because they’re on some travel list. Belfast is a must-see because its trajectory is still being defined and its history still being written.

Understanding the past is sometimes difficult, but it’s usually rewarding. And seeing it is often better than taking in the town’s wax museum.
