Rockdale County continues to reel from chemical fire

Rockdale County continues to reel after a Sept. 29 chemical fire at BioLab in Conyers, with some residents struggling to find accurate information about the circumstances.

Now, members of the Georgia House and Senate Rockdale County legislative delegations, the House Minority Caucus and the DeKalb County legislative delegation will meet at the Coverdell Legislative Office Building in Atlanta to hear from those impacted by the fire.

“This is a terrifying time for the citizens of Rockdale County, and because we know the impact is now regional, we must focus on the impact of the chemicals as it pertains to the environment and health of citizens,” Rep. Rhonda Taylor, D-Conyers, chair of the Rockdale County House Legislative Delegation, said in a statement. “We want to hear from anyone along the east corridor about how this incident has affected their lives and how we may be able to help.”

Rockdale County has largely opened government offices following the fire. While schools are in session, classes are virtual until Wednesday.

“Is Rockdale County Government giving our property owners a reduction on our 2025 ad valorem taxes and charge it to BioLab since this incident definitely has affected our current values? Who wants to move to Rockdale County now?” one resident asked on the county’s Facebook page.

The U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board is also probing the fire.
