The BioLab fire in Conyers, Georgia, “poses significant health risks due to smoke and chemical fallout, which have affected the well-being of” the Rockdale County and east metro Atlanta areas, a Georgia lawmaker said.
As many as 17,000 people in the area evacuated following the Sunday fire. At least 90,000 others east of Atlanta were advised to shelter in place due to the massive plume of dark smoke from the fire.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board sent investigators to probe a Sept. 29 chemical fire at the facility, which has a history of mishaps.
“At present, there is only one shelter available in Rockdale County to assist those displaced by the fire,” state Rep. Doreen Carter, D-Lithonia, said in a Friday statement. “Additionally, it is vital that we quickly identify the businesses in Rockdale County and surrounding areas that have been directly impacted.
“Obtaining this information is crucial for enabling the governor to request and distribute emergency resources where they are most needed,” Carter added. “In light of the ongoing threats to public health and safety, I am calling on the Governor to declare a state of emergency for Rockdale County and surrounding communities. It is essential that our community receives immediate resources and support during this challenging time.”
