Georgia gas prices rise with reinstatement of motor fuel tax

The Georgia gas price average increased at the pumps compared to a week ago, mainly due to the state’s reinstatement of the gas tax.

On Monday, AAA said Georgians pay an average of $2.93 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline. Monday’s state average is 23 cents more than a week ago, 2 cents less than a month ago, and 9 cents less than last year.

Citing Hurricane Helene, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp signed an executive order suspending the collection of motor fuel tax until Oct. 16.

“With the expiration of this gas tax reprieve, Georgians are now confronted with a renewed strain each time they refuel,” Montrae Waiters, an AAA spokeswoman, said in an announcement. “Fortunately, amid these challenges, there lies a glimmer of hope as Georgia’s state average for gas prices remains a comforting 24 cents below the national average.”
