Elections officials in the liberal enclave of Athens-Clarke County, Georgia, mistakenly sent a second absentee ballot for the Nov. 5 election to roughly 725 registered voters.
According to a Friday news release, the Elections Department discovered “a clerical error in a mailing list,” which officials said allowed the second absentee ballot.
ACC officials said absentee and in-person ballots are tied to an individual voter. The state’s elections system is designed to prevent more than one ballot from being cast.
“Our elections system is a secure process with multiple steps in place designed to ensure one vote per registered voter,” ACCGov Elections Department Director Charlotte Sosebee said in a statement. “In addition to this safeguard, we are contacting each of the affected voters through expedited mail, email, or phone to inform them about their absentee ballots and what steps to take with the ballots.”
