Officials break ground on $1.5 billion modernization project of JFK airport’s Terminal 4

December 15, 2021 - Queens - Governor Kathy Hochul, joined by Delta Airlines CEO Ed Bastian, Rick Cotton of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and local elected leaders, breaks ground on a $1.5 billion redevelopment of Terminal 4 at John F. Kennedy International Airport on Wednesday after the pandemic delayed the project by nearly two years. The development is part of an $18 billion plan set forth by the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey to transform one of the busiest airports in the U.S., which handles nearly 62 million passengers a year. Last week, officials broke ground on a $1.5 billion privately financed expansion and modernization of Terminal 4 at New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport.

“This is part of the story of our comeback, right here, right now, you witnessed this part of history,” New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said. “And just in a very short few years, when we’re starting to experience what a whole new vision for JFK looks like, all of you will have been part of that beautiful story that launches us into an even better future.”

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey previously reached a revised agreement with Delta Air Lines and JFK International Air Terminal, the operator of Terminal 4, to expand the facility. Delta will consolidate its operations there.

“What we’re proposing is a plan that had been talked about before the pandemic and today we’re signaling all the pre-pandemic plans need to be supercharged and acted upon right now,” Hochul said. “… It’s going to completely transform and modernize this terminal.”
