SMYRNA, Ga. — The Smyrna Museum has closed pending a restoration and overhaul of its exhibits.

The museum first opened in 1992. It moved to its current location, in a replica of the former Smyrna train depot, in 1999.

Last month, the city council voted to spend $185,000 on the project, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

“This is a project I feel personally is something we as citizens of Smyrna can use and hopefully bring in some classrooms and some children from the elementary schools and middle schools to come in and see the museum and be proud of what they have to look at,” the Marietta Daily Journal quoted city councilman Corkey Welch as saying. “The citizens should be proud of the museum.”

Last year, a former mayor and city councilman who co-founded the city’s historical society said the museum needed more space.
