Cobb Landmarks & Historical Society has raised more than $450,000 for its Next Generation capital campaign.

The Marietta City Council in December 2016 approved Cobb Landmarks’ request to add .082 acres of land adjacent to the Root House.

As part of the initiative, the group is expanding the William Root House campus in downtown Marietta, Ga., to include the historic 1830s Manning Cabin and brick smokehouse to the expanded property. The group is adding exhibit space, meeting and lecture space, a research library, visitor restrooms and executive offices.

“The addition of these structures will allow Cobb Landmarks to begin hosting temporary and traveling exhibitions, lectures, and large-scale educational programs, which will expand our reach in the community,” the group said on its website.

Hannah and William Root built what is today known as the William Root House circa 1845. William Root was one of Marietta’s earliest merchants and its first druggist.

He and his family fled as the Union Army approached Atlanta during the Civil War in 1864. They returned in July 1865.
