ATLANTA — A website created to highlight Civil War sites in Georgia leading up to the sesquicentennial of the War Between the States will be decommissioned.

Content from the GaCivilWar.org website will be incorporated into ExploreGeorgia.org.

Georgia was the scene of several major Civil War events, and more than two dozen Civil War battles were fought in Georgia. A number of sites — such as Kennesaw Mountain — are well preserved, while others have been lost to modern development.

Among the best-known Civil War events that happened in the Empire State of the South are the Great Locomotive Chase of 1862 and General William T. Sherman’s “March to the Sea” in 1864. The infamous Andersonville was also located in the Peach State.

In addition to information about specific Civil War-related sites, GaCivilWar.org features itineraries.
