Authorities looking for information on arson

ATLANTA — Authorities are calling a Nov. 9 fire that destroyed 2,600 acres in Clinch County’s Arabia Bay area arson, and they are looking to the public for information about the suspect or suspects.

“We have determined this fire was intentionally set,” Billy Leitch, lead investigator for the Georgia Forestry Commission Law Enforcement Department, said in a news release. “Our investigation is ongoing and we are pursuing all leads, so now is the time for anyone with information about this devastating fire to contact authorities.”

Officials have brought in arson specialists to analyze evidence and to build a case. If convicted, the suspect faces up to 20 years in prison and a $50,000 fine.

Firefighters continue to battle the blaze. In addition, the fire also caused a number of automobile wrecks, investigators said.

Authorities are offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information that leads to an arrest. Anyone with information is urged to call 1-800-GA-TREES (428-7337) or e-mail enforcement@gfc.state.ga.us.
