ABH: Area history buffs vow to hold the fort

WINDER, Ga. — Members of the Fort Yargo Living History Society gathered Saturday to replace the cabin’s chinking – essentially caulk between the logs of the cabin – with a more historically accurate mix than the concrete that was used during the 1950s.

But instead of donning modern work clothes, many in the group dressed in 18th-century garb, as they often to do to live history. Members of the group set up tents and even displays of period guns.

Some members of the Fort Yargo Living History Society don’t live in Barrow County, though they all exhibit a keen interest in history, often able to rattle off tidbits about 18th-century life and Northeast Georgia.

The fort, which dates to the late 18th century, is more than 120 years older than Barrow County itself.
