ABH: Winder merchants: Old hotel not the spot for parking lot

WINDER, Ga. — Saying a deck could alleviate parking problems downtown, Winder City Council members in December agreed to purchase the Old Granite Hotel building for $200,000. A month later, the city bought the building, located at the corner of Athens and Broad streets across from the Barrow County Courthouse.

The granite building — hence the name Old Granite Hotel — is one of the few remaining structures of its kind, if not the only, remaining in the state, Winder residents say.

Once razed, the site might be transformed into a traditional parking lot until the city gets grant money to pay for a parking deck, city officials say. Once finished, the structure might have three street-level storefronts and two or three levels of parking, according to initial plans.
