A Pendergrass police officer was shot and killed Wednesday evening, following a chase of a pickup truck on U.S. Highway 129, authorities said.
Shortly after 8 p.m., at least one officer with the department was chasing the truck and its two occupants on U.S. 129 in western Jackson County.
There may have been contact between the truck and the patrol cruiser leading to a crash, though it is unclear why police were chasing the truck or which way it was heading.
