String Cheese Great Addition to Entertainment Diet

Who would have thought that a group of friends living the good life in the mountains of Colorado would have amounted to a highly successful touring band?

Believe it or not, the String Cheese Incident is a band that came from just such humble roots.

The group will be performing at 10 p.m. on Saturday (Oct. 9) on the third floor of Slayter Hall.

The quintet of highly talented musicians blends a wide variety of music to create their own unique sound.

In June 1993, shortly after forming, the group stepped into the spotlight a the Telluride Bluegrass Festival in Telluride, CO.

Their roots, however, are very bluegrass oriented. With Michael Kang’s mandolin and violin, their latest release, ‘Round the Wheel, stays true to such influences as David Grisman and the New Bluegrass Revival.

Though their latest release does not receive the radio play of many nationally touring acts, their newest album did sell 3,000 copies within the first week of release.

However, according to Moseley, radio is one area that the band has not paid too much attention to.

Despite the lack of presence on the airwaves, the band has found much success as a touring commodity.

Having performed over 900 shows in the group’s six-year history, the group has been able to reach out to fans through the live medium.

Currently, the group averages over 160 shows a year for both domestic and international audiences and has moved out of the club circuit to perform many of its shows on an arena level.

In 1998, the band had the honor of closing the New Year’s Eve celebration at the Kaiser Auditorium in Oakland. CA with several members of the Grateful Dead and Hot Tuna. This year, the group performed a series of sold-out shows at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco, CA.

The future looks just as promising for the band as its recent history does.

This December, the group will be performing a New Year’s Eve show in Portland, OR. In January, the band will be releasing a live album of selected songs from recent tours.
