Atlanta starts design phase of the Memorial Drive Greenway

Atlanta City Hall.

The city of Atlanta Department of Parks and Recreation has started the design phase of the Memorial Drive Greenway.

The planned half-mile linear park will transform roughly 8.5 acres of land between Oakland Cemetery and the Downtown Connector into public green space. The first phase includes schematic design for the entire stretch and full design, as well as permitting and construction for one of the seven city blocks.

Funded in part by $560,037 in Council District 5 bond funds and $500,000 from the city’s fiscal 2027 Park Improvement Fund, the project will follow the 2016 Memorial Drive Vision Plan. Design firm Pond & Company will lead the process in collaboration with the city, partners and the public.

The Greenway will use Sustainable Sites Initiative strategies, including stormwater management and native plantings. Partners include the City of Atlanta, The Integral Group, Park Pride, the Friends of Memorial Drive Greenway and The Conservation Fund.
