The Assembly Oversight, Reform and Federal Relations Committee has advanced a measure that would permanently allow restaurants and some alcoholic beverage retailers to conduct business within designated outdoor spaces as an extension of their businesses.
Bill A4866 would allow restaurants and bars to extend their premises to outdoor locations permanently. Proponents contend it would help promote economic growth, giving local businesses the tools to succeed and grow in the evolving marketplace.
“By giving restaurants and similar businesses the opportunity to extend their services outdoors, we are helping them thrive in a post-pandemic world while fostering lively, community-centered outdoor spaces,” Assemblyman Roy Freiman, D-Hunterdon/Mercer/Middlesex/Somerset, said in a release. “This bill will provide a much-needed boost to local businesses and create more inviting spaces for patrons to enjoy.”
During COVID-19, the New Jersey Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control issued a Special Ruling that allowed restaurants and bars to establish temporary outdoor locations. Subsequent legislation extended the expiration date of this rule until Nov. 30.
