Officials have a new twist in mind for Lombard Street, the “Crookedest Street in the World.”
San Francisco and California officials want to charge tourists to drive down the venerable street. Officials say the plan is necessary due to the crowds of tourists who flock to the road.
“We must implement a system that enables both residents and visitors to enjoy the ‘Crookedest Street in the World,’” The Associated Press quoted San Francisco Assemblyman Phil Ting as saying.
Under the plan, tourists would have to make a reservation online to drive on the curvy road, located in the Russian Hill section of San Francisco. As it stands now, the fee for driving on Lombard Street would be $5 on weekdays and $10 on the weekend.
“While we want this treasure to be seen by people all around the world – and we want visitors – we also want to make sure that this neighborhood is livable for the people who do live here,” KPIX-TV quoted Ting as saying.
