Be patient: It will be a busy Christmas for travelers

It is going to be busy on the roads and at airports nationwide this year, so be patient.

AAA is estimating more than 103 million Americans are expected to travel for the year-end holidays. That is the most on record, the organization said.

The 103 million traveling Americans represents a 1.5 percent increase over a year ago. The increase comes despite one fewer travel day this holiday season.

The increase in holiday travel this year is being driven by additional consumer spending, a result of improvements in the labor market and rising wages, AAA said in a news release. Additionally, low gas prices and increased consumer optimism will prompt more Americans than ever to set out on road trips, take to the skies, or board trains, buses and cruise ships to celebrate the holidays, according to the organization.

“’Tis the season for holiday travel, and this year more Americans will travel to celebrate the holidays and ring in the New Year than ever before,” AAA President and CEO Marshall Doney said in a news release. “Rising incomes and continued low gas prices should make for a joyous holiday travel season.”

The year-end holiday travel period starts today and runs through Monday, January 2, 2017.
