The story of the nation’s 16th president embodies the American spirit. Born in a log cabin in Kentucky, he barely had any education, and throughout his life, he defied the naysayers. He established himself as a successful lawyer and amassed great wealth.

In 1860, he shocked the nation when he was elected president of a divided United States. But he proved there was likely no one else better suited for the job.

And more than a century and a half after he was gunned down by a Southern sympathizer at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C., his legacy remains as relevant today as it was on the day he died.
