A Buk missile fired from a section of Ukraine controlled by rebels downed Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 last year, investigators said today.

A total of 298 people were killed in the July 2014 crash. The Boeing 777 was traveling from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur when it was shot down near Hrabove, a village in eastern Ukraine near the Russian border.

In the aftermath, the Ukrainian government blamed pro-Russian separatists for shooting down the plane. However, Russian President Vladamir Putin placed the blame squarely on the soldiers of Ukraine, a position he reiterated this week, according to media reports.

“Our investigation showed that all parties regarded the conflict in eastern part of Ukraine from a military perspective,” ABC News quoted Safety Board chairman Tjibbe Joustra as saying. “Nobody gave any thought of a possible threat to civil aviation.”
