Berry knocks off Sewanee for first-ever road win

Kevin Grier returned an interception 52 yards for a touchdown to cap Berry College’s first-ever road victory, a hard-fought 14-3 defeat over Sewanee: The University of the South.

Sewanee took a 3-0 lead into halftime, thanks to a 27-yard field goal from Callum Wishart. But, Berry took the lead on an 18-yard touchdown run from Jalen Tuggle with 12:41 remaining in the third quarter.

The win not only secured Berry’s first-ever road win, it also gave the Vikings a three-game winning streak.

“We started finishing plays in the second half,” Berry Head Coach Tony Kunczewski said. “It wasn’t pretty, but we will take it. It feels good to be 3-1 and 2-0 in the conference.”

Added Kunczewski: “Our defensive staff has been doing a great job preparing the guys,” Kunczewski said. “They are working hard and preparing well.”

Tuggle led Berry’s ground attack with 85 yards on 18 carries. Tyler Bertolini led the Vikings’ defense with 11 tackles, including five solo tackles.

Berry (3-1) hosts Washington University (2-1) next week. Sewanee (1-3) travels to Rhodes (2-1).
