Mercer’s Chandler Curtis Named the SoCon Freshman of the Week

MACON, Ga. – The Southern Conference announced that Mercer University wide receiver Chandler Curtis has been selected as the league’s Freshman of the Week after his performance in the Bears’ 27-24 victory over VMI last Saturday.

Curtis was a true homerun threat for Mercer in its first SoCon victory, compiling a career-high 181 all-purpose yards on just six touches. He finished with two touchdowns on the afternoon, scoring on a 23-yard reverse before finding the end zone a second time on a 62-yard reception from quarterback John Russ in the third quarter.

The Calhoun, Ga. native has scored five touchdowns this season, finding the end zone in a number of ways. Curtis has three receiving scores and one rushing as well as a FCS-leading two return touchdowns. He currently leads the SoCon and ranks fourth in the FCS with a 33.6 kick-off return average.

The Southern Conference weekly honor is the second-straight for Curtis, who was named the SoCon Special Teams Player of the Week following the Bears’ victory over Ave Maria. Mercer has now had a football student-athlete recognized following each of the past three games, as Alex Lakes started the string with Freshman of the Week accolades for his performance in a 49-0 defeat of Stetson.

Mercer takes a three-game winning streak to Birmingham, Ala. this weekend, as the Bears face defending SoCon champion Samford on Saturday, October 4. Kick-off is set for 3 p.m. EST.
