Looking for a Thanksgiving travel deal? Book now, expert says

DANDRIDGE, Tenn. — It seems fairly logical that travelers looking for a cheaper getaway next month should consider traveling either of the first two weekends of November rather than the weekend before or after Thanksgiving.

But, according to travel search engine Hipmunk.com, travelers should consider flying the Monday before Thanksgiving or even on Thanksgiving Day to save money on airfare. At the same time, travelers should look to book a return flight on the Tuesday or Wednesday after Thanksgiving, if cost is of paramount concern.

The price of airfare in some cities, such as Chicago, can increase upwards of 700 percent from the second weekend in November to the third weekend of the month, according to Hipmunk.

“Lots of people make the mistake of waiting to catch a quick fare drop or deal, but most of those fare dips don’t come or last very long,” said Hipmunk co-founder Adam Goldstein. “Those who want to travel should book now because prices are only going up.”

Goldstein also recommends travelers consider setting up a free alert on his site to stay up to date on a specific flight’s price.
