Sightseers' Delight

Doctor’s orders? Take a vacation?

Try this one on your doctor next time.

A new survey from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority found that more than half of Americans (56 percent) think doctors should be able to prescribe vacations to relieve “stress related maladies.”

At the same time, 77 percent of Americans say their overall health improves after a getaway and more than 9 out of 10 Americans (93 percent) say they are happier after taking a vacation, according to the survey, named “The Takeaways from Getaways.”

“Vacations will greatly improve your quality of life,” Dr. Ian Smith, a health and wellness expert, said in a news release. Smith is a member of The President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition; and author of New York Times Bestsellers, The Fat Smash Diet, The 4 Day Diet, Happy and his latest book, The Truth About Men.

“Americans are always on the go and that rapid pace has serious effects on the deterioration of the mind and body,” Smith added. “I hope the findings of this research inspire Americans to take their wellbeing into their own hands and take the time to get away.”

Conducted between April 4-12, the survey has a 3 percent margin of error.
