National parks waiving entry fees through Sunday

ATLANTA — Through Sunday, the National Park Service is waiving entrance fees to encourage people to visit a national park.

Fees are being waived at dozens of national parks nationwide that usually charge entry fees, according to the NPS. Park entrance fees generally range from $3 to $25.

National Parks in Georgia that normally have fees include the Augusta Canal National Heritage Area in Augusta, the Cumberland Island National Seashore in St. Marys, Fort Frederica National Monument on St. Simons Island and Fort Pulaski National Monument in Savannah.

“National Park Week is a great time to visit and celebrate these places owned by all Americans,” National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis said in a news release.

“With 394 to choose from, you can find a national park for just about every interest, from battlefields commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War to great urban parks like Gateway and Golden Gate to gorgeous landscapes like Acadia or Mount Rainier where you can experience nature and all it has to offer,” Jarvis added. “There is no better place than a national park to exercise, have fun, or learn something.”
